The Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment has issued positive decisions-in-principle for the construction of six nuclear power plants across Poland, which will feature 24 small modular reactors (SMRs) totalling a capacity of 7.2 GW. Each power plant will feature four 300 MW BWRX-300 SMRs manufactured by the US company GE-Hitachi.
The plants will be developed by Orlen Synthos Green Energy (OSGE), a joint venture between the Polish company Orlen and the chemicals company Synthos. They will be located in Ostrołęka, Włocławek, Stawy Monowskie, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Nowa Huta (near Krakow), and the Tarnobrzeg Special Economic Zone. The SMRs are currently scheduled for operation by 2030.
To reduce its dependency on coal (70% of the country’s power mix in 2022), Poland aims to develop its nuclear power generation. The country is already developing two large-scale nuclear power plants: a 3 GW plant located near Choczewo which will feature three AP-1000 reactors from the US’ Westinghouse and a 2.8 GW plant in the Patnów-Konin region, which will feature two South Korean-supplied APR-1400 reactors.
