Poland and Ukraine move ahead on gas interconnection project

The Polish and Ukrainian transmission system operators, namely Gaz-System and Ukrtransgaz, plan to begin engineering works aiming at the implementation of the proposed Gas Interconnection Poland – Ukraine.

The project was announced in January 2015 and the feasibility study was finalised in December 2015, when the final arrangements on the technical and business specifications of the Project were taken. The gas pipeline project will link Hermanowice in Poland to Bliche Volytsia in Ukraine. It will enable Poland to export up to 5 bcm/year of gas to Ukraine (export capacity to be raised to up to 8 bcm/year, depending on market interest). The project will need to upgrade the Polish gas network (construction of the compressor station in Strachocina and of the Hermanowice - Strachocina, Strachocina - Pogórska Wola, Pogórska Wola - Tworzeń and Tworóg - Tworzeń pipelines). It is expected to start full commercial operation from 2020.

The main objective of connecting Polish and Ukrainian systems is to diversify gas supplies for Ukraine and further integration of transmission systems (therefore the energy markets) within the region of Eastern Europe. The development of new transmission capacities would ensure the increase of the energy security and diversification of supplies for Ukraine via Polish transmission system.
