Poland and Denmark launch the gas interconnection Open Season Phase 2

The Polish gas transmission network operator Gaz-System and its Danish counterpart Energinet.dk have launched the second phase of their Open Season procedure for their Baltic Pipe gas interconnection project, aimed at exporting up to 10 bcm/year of Norwegian gas to Poland through Denmark. It will allow shippers to bid for a capacity in the Baltic Pipe Project.

The Baltic Pipe Project was initially proposed in the 2000s as an extension to Poland of the Skanled gas pipeline project, linking Norway, Sweden and Denmark. It was suspended in May 2009 due to commercial risks and uncertainties regarding its environmental impact. However, the Poland-Denmark part of the gas pipeline project (Baltic Pipe) was reactivated in early 2010; this gas pipeline might be operational by 2020 (its development is subject to market opportunities). In February 2016, PGNiG revived the gas pipeline project to Norway, in an attempt to cut its reliance on Russian gas after 2022.
