PLN begins the construction of a 1 GW hydropower plant in Indonesia

The Indonesian state utility company PT PLN has started the construction of a 1,040 MW hydropower plant in West Java, near the city of Bandung. The US$850m Cisokan pumped storage hydropower plant will be comprised of four 260 MW pump turbines and is scheduled to be completed by 2027.

The plant is part of PT PLN’s plan to lower its carbon emissions as it moves towards shutting down some of its coal power plants, as Indonesia is aiming to boost the proportion of renewables to 23% of its total power generation by 2025. Under the country’s 2021-2030 power development plan, PT PLN aims to obtain an additional 10.4 GW of hydro capacity.

At the end of 2021, hydro represented 9% of Indonesia’s installed capacity with 7.3 GW and 8% of its power production with nearly 25 TWh. The country currently has 3.5 GW of hydro capacity under construction and 24 GW under development.
