Plenitude, the renewable arm of the Italian oil and gas company Eni, and the Irish offshore wind developer Simply Blue Group have signed an agreement to develop two floating offshore wind projects totalling 2.4 GW off the coast of southern Italy. The Messapia facility, located 30 km off the Otranto coast, will have a total capacity of 1.3 GW, and the Krimisa site, located 45 km off the coast of Crotone, will have a total capacity of 1.1 GW. The two projects, which will be able to provide annual power generation of about 3.8 TWh/year and 3.5 TWh/year respectively, have already been submitted to Italy’s relevant authorities. It is estimated that the projects will be able to cover the energy needs of more than 2.5 million Italian households.
Plenitude plans to reach 15 GW of renewable capacity by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2040. At the national level, at the end of 2021, Italy had no operational offshore wind capacity but had more than 11 GW of onshore wind (9% of the country’s installed capacity and 7% of its power generation with 21 TWh). Italy currently has nearly 20 GW of wind projects (onshore and offshore) under development. The country aims to cover 55% of its total electricity consumption from renewables by 2030.
