PJM fast-tracks 51 gas-fired, nuclear and BESS projects (9.4 GW) (US)

The US regional power transmission organisation (RTO) PJM Interconnection has selected 51 projects with a combined capacity of 9.4 GW to join a fast-track review process to come online. The selected projects include 39 uprates totalling 2.1 GW (mostly gas-fired capacity and nuclear to a lesser extent), and 12 new construction proposals totalling 7.25 GW (mostly gas-fired, batteries and nuclear). PJM plans to connect the projects to the interconnection Transition Cycle 2 and it expects 90% of the selected projects to be operating by 2030 (last ones in 2031).

Under its Reliability Resource Initiative (RRI), PJM selects shovel-ready projects with short lead times to construction and operation to prioritise their connection to the grid, with an estimated waiting-time cut of 18 months compared to the grid operator’s normal interconnection process. PJM received 94 applications totalling 26.6 GW for its RRI in March 2025. The company plans to launch a new process to interconnect with the system will begin in spring 2026.
