The Philippine’s Department of Energy (DOE) has selected SunAsia Energy, a Philippines-based solar developer, and Blueleaf Energy to build and operate six large-scale floating solar projects totalling 610 MW and which will be installed on Laguna Lake near Manila (northern Philippines). The six projects represent the initial set of Solar Energy Operating Contracts (SEOCs) awarded by the DOE for a total of 1.3 GW of floating solar projects. Each contract has a 25-year operating period. The two companies plan to invest US$1.2bn for the projects, which are expected to be commissioned in 2024.
According to the DOE, a total of 237 solar energy contracts with an aggregate installed capacity of 1,282 MW and potential capacity of 21,452 MW have already been awarded by the department.
At the end of 2021, solar represented about 5% of the Philippines installed capacity with 1.3 GW. The country has another 1.8 GW of solar capacity in construction and 12.4 GW of solar projects under development.
