The Philippines has the potential to develop 21 GW of offshore wind by 2040

The Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) and the World Bank have released a new roadmap, which shows that the country has the potential to instal 21 GW of offshore wind by 2040 under the high growth scenario, making up 21% of its power generation. Under the low growth scenario, which provides a roadmap for installing offshore wind at levels in line with the DOE’s national renewable energy program, the Philippines has the potential to instal 3 GW of offshore wind by 2040, making up 3% of its electricity supply. The Renewable energy roadmap 2020-2040 aims to reach 35% of renewables in the power mix by 2030, and 50% by 2040 under a Clean Energy Scenario (CES) (35% in a Reference Scenario).

Coal currently dominates the power mix in the Philippines (57% in 2020), with an increasing share (+23 points since 2010); the share of gas is decreasing (19%, -10 points). Renewables represent 21% of the mix, of which 11% from geothermal, 7% from hydro, and 1% each from wind, solar and biomass.
