Poland's largest power utility PGE (Polska Grupa Energetyczna) has released its 2014 results: the company's power generation dropped by 4% in 2014 to 54.8 TWh, as lignite-fired generation decreased by 6% (38.8 TWh) and coal-fired generation by 3% (12 TWh), due to the decommissioning of unit-10 at the Turow lignite-fired power plant and Dolna Odra-3 coal-fired power plant and to the modernisation at Belchatow-12 and Turow-3. Renewable power generation progressed noticeably for biomass (+22%) and wind (+49%), though remaining marginal, while gas-fired generation rose by 5% to 1.2 TWh and hydropower generation declined to 0.9 TWh.
In 2014, PGE invested PLN 6.35bn (€1.5bn), 54% of which was directed to the modernisation of conventional power plants, 14% to new conventional projects, 6% to renewables, 23% to distribution networks and 3% to supply and wholesale. The group plans to commission the 2x900 MW Opole II power plant in 2018-2019 and the 490 MW Turow plant in the third quarter of 2015.
