PGE wins site auction for its Baltica 4 offshore wind project (Poland)

The Polish government has selected PGE in its Phase 2 site auction, granting the Polish power utility the 43.E.1 lease spanning over 118 km2; three other bidders were qualified for the auction, namely EDF, Cormano and POW-Polish Offshore Wind.

The 43.E.1 lease enables the construction of up to 990 MW of new offshore wind projects. PGE is already developing 3.4 GW of offshore wind projects through the 0.9 GW Baltica 1 and the 2.5 GW Baltica-2-3 projects. The new lease paves the way for the development of PGE's Baltica 4 offshore wind project and will contribute to the group's strategic target to reach 6.5 GW of installed generation capacity in the Baltic Sea by 2040.

PGE is bidding for 8 of the 11 concessions that Poland plans to award in the second round of proceedings for permits and that could lead to developing around 11 GW of offshore wind projects. Earlier in January 2023, the government declined to award a lease for the 53.E.1 site, considering that none of the bidders had obtained the minimum qualification and that they failed to provide suitable project permitting and completion timelines. Nine other sites remain to be awarded.
