PGE plans to build two new gas-fired power plants in Poland (1.2 GW)

The Polish power group PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna has signed agreements to develop 1.2 GW of open-cycle gas units (OCGT) in Poland (PGE press release, 04/03/2026). The PLN6bn (EUR1.4bn) contracts were signed with a consortium led by Polimex Mostostal in partnership with Siemens Energy.

The power plants are planned to have a capacity of about 600 MW each and to be located in Rybnik (southern Poland) near the 882 MW PGE Nowy Rybnik CCGT currently under construction and at Gryfino (western Poland), near the existing 1366 MW Gryfino Dolna Odra CCGT plant in Nowy Czarnów. Construction works are expected to start in May-June 2027 and the power plants should be commissioned in 2030. Once operational, the projects should provide additional protection at times of peak demand for electricity.

According to the Polish Minister of State Assets, the agreements have secured a capacity of nearly 3.5 GW in gas sources in Rybnik and Gryfino by 2030 for PGE Group, which plans to develop gas-fired units with a total capacity of nearly 10 GW. The Minister also declared that the government has an “ambitious investment program in the Polish energy sector” with investments in nuclear, offshore, gas-fired power plants, energy storage facilities or investments in distribution networks amounting to trillions of zlotys to strengthen energy security in the country.
