PG&E meets California's 2020 renewables target ahead of schedule (US)

The US power utility Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) has met the Californian 2020 renewable energy target (33%) three years ahead of schedule: the company delivered 33% of its electricity from renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and hydroelectric in 2017. This is PG&E's highest ever percentage of clean energy deliveries. Overall, 80% of its electricity came from greenhouse-gas (GHG) free resources (including nuclear) in 2017.

California's 2020 mandate requires energy companies to reach 33% of their retail power deliveries from renewable energy sources. PG&E is on pace to reach California's 2030 target of 50% renewables and a separate company target of 55% renewables by 2031 ahead of schedule.

In January 2018, PG&E announced that it would shut down the 2,256 MW Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in California by 2025. The two reactors were commissioned in 1985 and 1986, respectively, and are the sole operating nuclear reactors in California. They will be replaced with new clean and renewable energy sources.
