PGE EJ1 started environmental surveys for Poland nuclear reactors

Polska Grupa Energetyczna Energia Jądrowa 1 (PGE EJ1) , the nuclear subsidiary of the Polish company Polska Grupa Energetyczna S.A. (PGE) announced it has started localization and environmental studies related to the preparatory work for the construction of the first Polish nuclear power plant (NPP).

PGE EJ1 is a special purpose vehicle in charge of Poland's nuclear program. PGE Group holds a 70% share while ENEA, KGHM Polska Miedź and TAURON Polska Energia hold a 10% interest each.

The studies are expected to be completed during the first half of 2020. The research is conducted by PGE EJ1 and ELBIS, a subsidiary of PGE Capital Group. All decisions on further implementation of the program for the construction of the first Polish nuclear plant will require approval of the Ministry of Energy.

The research will focus on the Pomerania province (North-west Poland) and the company mentioned two localizations („Lubiatowo-Kopalino” and „Żarnowiec”) close to the cities of Choczewo, Krokowa and Gniewino.

Poland's nuclear program has been approved in 2014 and the country plans to commission two nuclear power plants of 3,000 MW each (the first one in 2029 and the second one in 2035). The first plant is estimated to cost between €12bn and €14bn, and will be located in Żarnowiec or Choczewo. The final investment decision for the two plants is expected by 2018, to allow construction to start in 2020.
