PGE and Tauron seek approval to create an offshore wind JV (Poland)

The Polish power utilities Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE, 51.5% state-owned) and Tauron (30.1% state-owned) are seeking approval from the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection - Polands's anti-monopoly regulator - to create a joint venture to develop offshore wind projects. In January 2021, PGE, Tauron and Enea signed a letter of intent on cooperation in future offshore wind projects to be located within the boundaries of the Polish Exclusive Economic Zone in the Baltic Sea.

In May 2021, PGE created a common enterprise with the Danish energy group Ørsted to jointly own the 1,498 MW Baltica 2 and 1,045 MW Baltica 3 offshore wind projects in Polish Baltic Sea. Baltica 2 and Baltica 3 won a Contract for Difference (CfD) with a price up to to PLN 319.6/MWh (€70.2/MWh) in April 2021. The two projects have already secured environmental permits and connection agreements and should be commissioned before 2030 (by 2026 for Baltica 3 and by 2027 for Baltica 2).

Poland is expected to have 11 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2040. The country currently has 49 GW of installed capacity (end-2020), including 63% of coal, 13% of wind, 8% of gas and 8% of solar.
