State-owned Petrovietnam has begun construction on the VND27.7 trillion (US$1bn) O Mon IV thermal power plant in Can Tho, Vietnam. The 1.15 GW plant is the first downstream project within the Block B–O Mon gas-to-power value chain, which contains an estimated 100 bcm of gas. Once operational, the system will supply 5–6 bcm of gas annually for electricity generation.
The gas-to-power value chain includes offshore gas extraction at Block B, the Block B–O Mon gas pipelines, and a cluster of thermal power plants. Located in the Malay–Tho Chu basin, Block B is Vietnam’s second-largest upstream gas project, after Ca Voi Xanh (Blue Whale). Commercial operations of O Mon IV are scheduled to begin in December 2028, coinciding with the first gas deliveries from Block B. The plant is expected to supply electricity to the Mekong Delta region.
As of the end of 2024, Vietnam’s total installed capacity stood at 90 GW, with gas accounting for nearly 10% of the energy mix.
