Petronet will build an LNG terminal to host a 5.5 bcm/year FSRU in India

The Indian oil and gas company Petronet LNG has approved a plan to build an LNG import terminal at the Gopalpur harbour, in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, which will host a 4 Mt/year (5.5 bcm/year) floating storage and regasification units (FSRU). The terminal is expected to become operational by 2025.

The plan has a provision for conversion to a land-based terminal, at a total project cost of INR23.1bn (US$280m). Petronet now plans to apply for environmental clearance and launch relevant tenders.

Petronet already owns two LNG import terminals in Dahej (Gujarat) and Kochi (Kerala), with a total capacity of 30 bcm/year (47% of the country’s total regasification capacity). In 2021, India imported nearly 33 bcm of LNG and consumed a total of 64.5 bcm of natural gas (6% of India’s total energy consumption).
