PetroChina starts test runs for a 400 kb/d refinery complex in southern China

The Chinese state-owned oil and gas company PetroChina has begun trial runs on the 200 kb/d crude oil processing unit number 2 at its 400 kb/d refinery complex, located in the city of Jieyang, Guangdong province (southern China).

The unit will be running at 70% of capacity for 10 days processing nearly 200,000 tonnes of crude oil. The Jieyang refinery complex, which also includes a 1.2 Mt/year ethylene plant, is PetroChina's largest investment of its kind in China (US$10bn). It is expected to be officially commissioned before the end of 2022.

China’s refining capacity reached 17 mb/d at the end of 2021. There are around 65 refineries with a capacity of over 100 kb/d. The Zhejiang Dayushan refinery, commissioned in 2019 and expanded in 2020, is the country’s largest refinery, with a capacity of 800 kb/d, followed by the Zhenhai (Sinopec) and Dalian (CNPC) refineries with capacities of more than 400 kb/d each.
