Petrobras (Brazil) takes FID on oil project targeting 1 Gboe output

Petrobras has approved the final investment decision (FID) of the SEAP I project, in the Sergipe‑Alagoas Basin, consolidating the development of Sergipe Águas Profundas (SEAP), a new frontier of oil and gas production in Brazil (Petrobras press release, 13/04/2026).

The decision advances the broader Sergipe Águas Profundas (SEAP) development, following prior FID of the SEAP II project in December 2025. The projects are designed to unlock significant volumes of light oil and natural gas from deepwater fields offshore Brazil.

As part of the development, Petrobras is progressing contract negotiations for two floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) units, P‑81 and P‑87, which will support SEAP I and SEAP II, respectively. The two platforms together will have an installed capacity to produce up to 240 kb/d and process 22 mcm/d (8 bcm/year) of natural gas. The start of oil production is scheduled for 2030, with gas exports starting in 2031.

The two projects foresee the production of more than 1 Gboe, contributing significantly to the increase in Brazil’s national oil and gas production.

According to preliminary estimates, Brazil’s crude oil production rose by 10% in 2025 to over 192 Mt, i.e., 73% of the country’s oil consumption and its gas production surged by 16% to 26 bcm, i.e., 56% of gas consumption.
