Petrobras approves USD1.2bn biorefining project in Brazil (15 kb/d)

Petrobras has reached a final investment decision (FID) on its RPBC Biorefining project in Cubatão, Sao Paulo (Brazil) (Petrobras press release, 19/06/2026). The project represents a USD1.2bn investment for the construction of a unit dedicated to the production of aviation biokerosene (bioQAV) and renewable diesel at the Presidente Bernardes Refinery (RPBC). The unit is planned to have a capacity to produce up to 15 kb/d of renewable fuels once it starts operations in 2030.

The initiative is part of Petrobras 2026-2030 Business Plan and is part of the company's strategy to expand its operations in the segment of fuels with lower carbon intensity.

According to Enerdata’s Global Energy & CO2 data, Brazil is the second biofuel producer in the world after the US (28.3 Mt in 2025).
