Petrobras achieves first oil from FPSO in deepwater field (Brazil)

The Brazilian oil and gas company Petrobras has started production from the FPSO P-78 in the Búzios field located in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin in Brazil (Petrobras press release, 02/01/2026).

  • The field has the capacity to produce up to 180 kb/d of oil and 7.2 mcm/d of gas (about 65.7 mb/year of oil and 2.6 bcm/year of gas).
  • The FPSO is expected to increase the field’s capacity to about 1.15 mb/d of oil (approximately 420 mb/year).
  • The project is also expected to increase the supply of gas in Brazil by up to 3 mcm/d (1.1 bcm/year) through an interconnection with the ROTA 3 gas pipeline.

Petrobras aims to increase its oil and gas production during 2026 to 2.5 mb/d of oil, much of which is expected to come from the Búzios field. The field was discovered in 2010, is located at 180 km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro and it has seven platforms in operation.
