Peru's rural electrification target of 100% by 2021 remains achievable

The Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) and the General Directorate of Rural Electrification (DGER) plan to achieve their rural electrification objective of 100% by 2021 as per the National Plan of Rural Electrification 2011-2020. In 2016, the rural electrification rate stood at nearly 76% (World Bank), against an average electrification rate of nearly 95%.

Throughout 2018, 242 rural localities were electrified in the regions of Amazonas, Ancash, Apurímac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cusco, Huancavelica, Loreto, Puno and Ucayali.

Renewable energies will play a leading role in the country's electrification plans, especially in hard-to-reach areas. The 2021 target will require the deployment of new transmission lines, rural power systems and solar photovoltaic (PV) modules. The estimated investment for these projects should reach about US$1bn and will benefit 2.9 million Peruvians.
