Peru will invest US$200m in southern gas distribution networks

According to ProInversión, the Peruvian Agency for the Promotion of Private Investment, the country plans to invest around US$200m in developing gas networks in seven regions in southern Peru, namely Cusco, Apurímac, Puno, Junín, Ayacucho, Huancavelica and Ucayali. New gas distribution pipelines should be built soon to connect more than 113,000 homes (around 500,000 people).

As of December 2019, more than 1.1 million households (more than 4 million Peruvians, out of a total of 32.5 million) were connected to the gas distribution network, mainly around Lima and Callao. The government aims to improve gas access. It has been working on developing the Integrated Natural Gas Transportation System - South Zone (SIT Gas) and signed contracts for distributing gas in the Piura and Tumbes regions in 2019.

Peru is also developing the Gasoducto Sur Peruano gas transmission pipeline, that will stretch over more than 1,000 km from Camisea (Cusco) to a new petrochemical complex to be built in Ilo (Moquegua), near the Chilean border. The project's construction was awarded to Odebrecht, which had to divest its stake in the project in 2017 against a corruption scandal in Brazil. The project has been blocked since then.
