Peru will ensure natural gas supply to 18% of households by 2021

The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) of Peru intends to ensure natural gas supply to 5.2 million Peruvians, i.e. 18% of the country's households, by 2021. Universal gas supply is one of the pillars of the country's 2010-2040 energy policy. By 2030, Peru aims to have 16 million Peruvians or 50% of the country's households connected to the gas network.



Concrete investments to reach the target involve the promotion of interconnection infrastructure in Tumbes (US$25m to be invested in 2019 for 20,000 connections), in Piura (US$159m for 64,000 connections), in Quavii (US$74.6m for 21,500 connections) and in Ucayali, Junín, Cusco, Huancavelica, Ayacucho, Apurímac and Puno (US$400m for 113,000 connections).



Calidda, Gas Natural de Lima y Callao, has the concession for the distribution network of Lima. In 2017 the company had 570,000 customers, of which 521,000 in the residential sector. Contugas, the second largest gas distributor, distributes natural gas in the Ica region: in 2017 the company had 42,000 customers, almost all from in residential sector.
