Peru explores options for 1 GW power interconnection with Chile

The Peruvian government has proposed resuming talks with Chile on a 1 GW bidirectional power interconnection between Montalvo, in southern Peru, and Kimal, in northern Chile (Biobiochile, 18/10/2026). The 500 kV link would allow exchanges of 3.6-5.7 TWh/year, with combined economic benefits averaging USD170m/year. The development of the USD550m project (according to a 2025 study commissioned by the Inter-American Development Bank) depends on technical, regulatory and commercial agreements between the two countries. The topic may be taken up at the Peru-Chile binational meeting on 29 November 2026.

Separately, EnorChile Transmission has submitted an environmental impact statement to Chile’s Environmental Assessment Service (SEA) in October 2026 for the Los Héroes-Parinacota line, which would connect with a substation in Peru. The line would be rated at 220 kV and 250 MVA and includes a converter substation to bridge the two grids’ different operating frequencies. The overall investment on the project approximates USD30m, and construction would take 24 months after a favourable environmental approval and sectoral permits.
