The Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) has announced that it expects to connect almost 2.5 GW of new solar capacity to the grid by 2028. A portfolio of 14 solar projects is currently under development and they are scheduled to start commercial operations by 2028, adding to the country’s existing 332 MW (end of 2023). The projects are in the departments of Arequipa, Moquegua and Ica, and two of them belong to isolated systems, which will be developed in Loreto. Among pipeline, there are four projects which are closer to connection, specifically the 252.40 MW San Martín Solar (US$168m), the 250 MW Solimana (US$176m) and the 204 MW Sunny (US$177m) all in Arequipa, as well as the 181.2 MW Lupi (US$193m) in Moquegua.
Peru’s National Energy Plan 2014-2025 has a target of 60% of renewables in the electricity mix in 2025 (52% in 2023). At the end of 2023, solar represented 2% of the country’s total installed capacity (16 GW).
