Peru approves EIA of 6 GW solar project for green ammonia (0.42 Mt/year)

The Peruvian Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has approved the Detailed Environmental Impact Study (EIA-d) of the Green Hydrogen Production Plant – Horizonte de Verano project. The US$11.2bn project is being developed by Horizonte de Verano (led by Latin America-focused renewables company Verano Energy) in the provinces of Caylloma and Camaná, in the department of Arequipa (Southern Peru). The mega-project will focus on the production of green hydrogen to obtain ammonia for the chemical and energy industry, and it will include a water desalination plant, a 500 kV electrical substation, a solar PV plant, and a multi-buoy terminal for the export of the products generated. The project is planned to be developed in five phases, with an estimated useful life of 30 years, until it reaches its full capacity of 5.85 GW of solar generation and the production of 1.65 Mt of green ammonia once it becomes fully operational by 2032. The first phase consists of a 1.5 GW solar plant and an ammonia capacity of 420 kt/year that could start operation by mid-2027.

Horizonte de Verano seeks to become one of the main generators of green ammonia, mainly aimed at export, expecting to position the country as a benchmark in the production of green H2 in the region and to represent a milestone for the country’s sustainable industrialization.
