PEJ seeks location decision for Poland’s first nuclear plant

Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) has submitted an application to Pomorskie Region for a location decision on the country’s first nuclear project, which is intended to be situated in the Choczewo commune in Pomerania. This marks a crucial administrative milestone in the process leading to the plant's construction. The decision will grant PEJ the necessary land rights for construction, both on land and at sea. It will also outline the properties involved in the project, establish conditions for the investment's execution—covering technical, environmental, conservation, and fire protection aspects—and pave the way for construction.

PEJ is a special purpose developper meant to develop the country's nuclear programme owned by the Polish state-owned power utility PGE (70%), in partnership with Tauron Polska Energia, ENEA, and copper mining company KGHM Polska (10% each). So far, the company have obtained a principal decision from the Ministry of Climate and Environment, affirming the alignment of the project with the national energy policy, as well as a general opinion confirming the validity of safety analysis verification by the National Atomic Energy Agency. Environmental procedures aimed at obtaining a decision on environmental conditions are also well advanced.

In February 2023, PEJ signed a contract with Westinghouse (United States) covering front-end engineering, early procurement work and programme development to advance Poland’s new nuclear energy programme. In November 2022, the government selected Westinghouse to build the country’s first nuclear power plant, which will initially host three AP1000 reactors. Construction should start in 2026.
