The Polish Ministry of Energy, Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) and the state-owned power utility Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE) have signed an agreement for the development of Poland’s second nuclear power plant (EJ2) (Polish government press release, 13/10/2026). Under the agreement, PEJ will be the investor and coordinator of the project, while PGE will prepare site analyses and preliminary feasibility studies with potential technology suppliers.
A competitive dialogue is expected soon to select a technology supplier and project contractor, with participants from the United States, France and Canada. According to the PEJ, the technology supplier and contractor are expected to be announced by 2027, construction of the project is planned around 2032, and the commissioning of the first power unit should be around 2040. No capacity has yet been stated for the EJ2 project.
The agreement reflects the updated Polish nuclear power programme adopted by the Council of Ministers in September 2026.
Poland’s first nuclear power plant (EJ1) at Lubiatowo-Kopalino (Choczewo), comprises three Westinghouse AP1000 reactors totalling 3,750 MW. Construction is scheduled to start in 2028 and the first unit to enter commercial operation in 2036, and full capacity is expected by 2038.
