Pattern reaches financial close on the US$11bn SunZia wind and transmission project

The US company Pattern Energy has reached financial close on its 3.5 GW SunZia onshore wind and transmission project, located in the US State of New Mexico. The company has closed US$11bn of non-recourse financing and has begun full construction of SunZia Transmission and SunZia Wind.

SunZia Transmission is an 885 km, 525kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line between central New Mexico and south-central Arizona with the capacity to transport 3 GW of electricity. The line will deliver power generated by Pattern Energy’s 3,515 MW SunZia Wind facility, which is currently under construction in the Torrance, Lincoln, and San Miguel Counties of New Mexico.

In addition, the Danish turbine manufacturer Vestas announced that it has been selected by Pattern to power a 1.1 GW portion of the SunZia Wind project.  It is Vestas’ largest order to date in the US market, for which the Danish group will supply 242 of its V163-4.5 MW turbine.

Pattern got approval to develop the project from the US States of Arizona and New Mexico in November 2022. In July 2022, Pattern Energy had acquired the SunZia transmission line project from SouthWestern Power Group, a subsidiary of US construction engineering company MMR Group. Previously, Pattern Energy completed the 1 GW Western Spirit wind project in New Mexico in January 2022 and brought online the Western Spirit 249 km, 345 kV transmission line in December 2021.
