California-based renewable energy company Pattern Energy has acquired the 3 GW SunZia transmission line project that will link wind farms in the US state of New Mexico to Arizona. Construction of the 525-kV high voltage alternating current (HVAC), 885 km transmission line is expected to start in 2023.
Pattern Energy, who is already developing the 3 GW SunZia wind farm in New Mexico, acquired the SunZia transmission line project from SouthWestern Power Group, a subsidiary of US construction engineering company MMR Group. SouthWestern Power Group will retain ownership of a second 500-kV HVAC transmission line, El Rio Sol transmission project.
The price was not disclosed however Pattern Energy said the transmission line project and the wind farm project would represent an investment of US$8bn, and that both are privately funded. The SunZia transmission line and wind farm are expected to be commissioned in 2025 and 2026 respectively.
Previously, Pattern Energy completed the 1 GW Western Spirit wind project in New Mexico in January 2022 and brought online the Western Spirit 249 km, 345 kV transmission line in December 2021.
