Hungarian power utility MVM has been allowed by the Hungarian National Atomic Energy Office (OAH) to extend the operating licence of the third reactor of the Paks nuclear power plant by another 20 years.

The 473 MW VVER-440 PWR unit was commissioned in 1986 and its operating licensedwas due to expire on 31 December 2016. With this license extension, the unit will continue operations until the end of 2036. A similar application has been submitted to extend the lifetime of the fourth reactor until 31 December 2037; units 1 and 2 have already been allowed to operate until 2032 and 2034, respectively.

MVM also aims to add two new 1,200 MW Russian-built VVER-1200 reactors on the site of the existing nuclear facility. Construction of the Paks expansion is expected to start in 2018 (pending approval by the European Commission), with commissioning scheduled in 2025-2026.
