Pakistan's LNG demand could to triple over the next 5 years

State-run LNG importer and distributor Pakistan LNG expects the domestic LNG demand to more than triple in the next three to five years. LNG imports are estimated at 7 Mt in 2018: they could increase to as high as 15 Mt/year in 2019 and range between 25 Mt/year and 30 Mt/year over the 2022-2024 period.

Pakistan plans to increase its import and regasification capacity. Two import terminals are currently operational and their capacity is nearly fully used. The first import terminal is located in Port Qasim (near Karachi, Pakistan). It has been in operation since 2015 and has an operational regasification capacity of 4.5 Mt/year. It is owned by ETPL (Engro Corporation), Vopak and International Finance Corporation. The second import terminal came onstream in 2017 and is located in Karachi, with an operational capacity of 5.6 Mt/year. Two other LNG import projects are expected to reach the final investment decision (FID) stage later in 2019.
