Pakistan LNG Terminals has approved an LNG service agreement with a consortium of Pakistan GasPort and Fotco (Fauji Oil Terminal and Distribution Company) to handle LNG imports in Pakistan.
Pakistan GasPort and Fotco emerged as the lowest bidder for the development of the second Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) in the Port Qasim terminal in Karachi. In January 2016, the government of Pakistan launched a tender for a second LNG import terminal and related infrastructures, in an attempt to ease gas shortages before a 2018 general election. The proposed FSRU may have a regasification capacity of 600 mcf/d (17 mcm/d, i.e. 6.2 bcm/year) and will be able to store at least 170,000 m3 of gas. The US$135m project is expected to be completed in 11 months (by mid-2017).
The first LNG import terminal was also built in Karachi by Elengy Terminal Pakistan Ltd (EPTL, wholly owned by Engro Corp) and commissioned in April 2015.
