Pakistan connects to the grid the 660 MW Unit 1 of the Thar coal power plant

The first 660 MW unit of the Thar coal-fired power plant, located in the Tharparkar district of the Sindh province (south-eastern Pakistan) has been connected to the Pakistani grid. When completed, the Thar power plant, which is being developed by the Chinese company Shanghai Electric, will comprise two units totalling 1,320 MW, as well as an integrated coal mine with a production capacity of 7.8 Mt/year.

In October 2022, the Pakistani company Thar Energy commissioned another 330 MW coal-fired power plant in the Tharparkar district.

At the end of 2020, coal represented 11% of Pakistan’s installed capacity with 4.2 GW and 12% of its power generation with 17 TWh. In 2020, the government of Pakistan announced that it would not build new coal-fired power plants. However, 3.7 GW of coal capacity is still under construction and nearly 10 GW are under development in the country.
