Pakistan allows K-Electric's gas pipeline supplying 900 MW power project

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) of Pakistan has authorised K-Eletric to build and operate a gas pipeline to supply regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) for the 900 MW Bin Qasim III RLNG-fired power project and supplementing fuel requirement of the power plants located at its Bin Qasim Power Complex. K-Eletric applied for a licence to undertake regulated activity related to the construction and operation of gas pipeline along with ancillary facilities in May 2020. The Bin Qasim III project is due to be commissioned in 2021 (first 450 MW unit by the summer of 2021 and second unit by the end of 2021).

K-Electric has an installed capacity of 2.3 GW (of which 1.4 GW gas-fired at Bin Qasim) and in addition, has arrangements with independent power producers (IPPs) for around 1.4 GW. In October 2016, Abraaj Group agreed to sell its 66.4% stake in K-Electric to Shanghai Electric Power Co (SEP) for US$1.77bn. Abraaj Group filed for liquidation in June 2018. SEP remains on track to purchase the company, but the transaction is facing delays.
