OX2 submits EIA to develop its 2.2 GW Laine offshore wind project in Finland

The Swedish renewable developer OX2 has submitted an environmental impact assessment (EIA) to the Finnish authorities for the development of its 2.2 GW Laine offshore wind project, to be built in Finland’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the Gulf of Bothnia. The EIA covers the offshore wind park, its electricity transmission and hydrogen pipeline, offshore power stations, and hydrogen production plants. The Laine project is expected to feature up to 150 wind turbines, with an estimated electricity production of about 11 TWh/year. The permit procedures and surveys related to the project are expected to last until the end of 2026.

OX2 is currently developing two additional offshore wind parks in Finland’s Gulf of Bothnia, namely the 2.4 GW Halla project and the 1.2 GW Tyrsky project.

According to Finland's NECP, renewables are expected to account for at least 51% of the country's final energy consumption in 2030 and the country aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035.
