OX2 receives approval to build a 1.7 GW offshore wind park in Sweden

The Swedish renewable developer OX2 has received approval from County Administrative Board of Halland (southern Sweden) to build the up to 1.7 GW Galatea-Galene offshore wind project. The project will be divided into two areas, one called Galatea, 25 km outside the city of Falkenberg, and the other called Galene, about 25 km off the town of Varberg. The wind park, which is proposed to be built without subsidies, could enter construction by 2026, once all approvals are granted, and could generate 6 to 7 TWh/year of clean electricity before 2030.

In June 2022, OX2 applied for a construction permit to build for a 5.5 GW offshore wind project in the Swedish Exclusive Economic Zone between the islands of Gotland and Öland. The company is also developing several wind projects in Finland nearing a total of 7 GW. OX2’s portfolio of offshore wind projects stood at 18.3 GW at the end of 2022.

Under the Agreement on Swedish Energy Policy, Sweden has issued a roadmap for a transition to an entirely renewable electricity system (100% renewable electricity production) by 2040. In 2021, the country had 193 MW of offshore wind capacity (and nearly 12 GW of onshore wind).
