The Swedish renewable energy company OX2 and Ingka Investments, a subsidiary of Ingka Group, have submitted a permit application under the act of Sweden’s Exclusive Economic Zone to develop a 3.1 GW offshore wind energy hub off the coast of Blekinge, in southern Sweden. The Neptunus energy hub is planned to comprise up to 207 wind turbines and will be situated about 50 km from the Swedish coast.
Once completed, the offshore hub is expected to generate between 13 and 15 TWh/year of electricity. OX2 had previously applied for a Natura 2000 permit for the energy hub. If the permits are obtained, construction of the hub is expected to start in 2030. In addition to offshore wind power, OX2 and Ingka Investments have also applied for offshore hydrogen production of maximum 370 kt/year, as well as a pilot project to oxygenate the Baltic Sea.
In 2022, Sweden had 193 MW of installed offshore wind capacity and over 14 GW of onshore wind. Sweden has more than 3 GW of wind power capacity under construction and nearly 84 GW under development. Sweden aims to reach an entirely "fossil-free" electricity system by 2040 (the initial mention (2016) of a "100% renewable electricity system" was replaced by "fossil-free" to include nuclear in 2023).
