The New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) of Egypt has received construction permit requests for a total of 6,340 MW of power projects. Over 40% of this volume (2,750 MW) is developed by the private sector, including 1,950 MW of wind projects and 800 MW of solar PV projects. According to the NREA, renewable energy sources generated nearly 21 TWh in 2019 (nearly 22 TWh in 2018), including 14.6 TWh from hydropower plants, 3.3 TWh from wind parks and around 2.4 TWh from solar parks.
Egypt aims to raise the share of renewables in its power mix from the current 9% (in 2018, including hydropower): the 2035 Integrated Sustainable Energy strategy (2016) set a target of 20% of renewable power generation in 2022 and a target of 42% of power production from renewables has also been set for 2035, with 25% from solar, 14% from wind, and 2% from hydropower. The plan suggests significant private sector involvement, which is expected to deliver most of the new capacity.
