According to the International Hydropower Association’s 2025 World Hydropower Outlook report, around 24.6 GW of new hydropower capacities were commissioned in 2024, including 8.4 GW of pumped-storage (+5%). Most of this new capacity was added in the East-Asia and Pacific region (nearly 14.6 GW installed, including 14.4 GW in China), followed by Africa (4.5 GW, of which 1.9 GW in Tanzania and 1.2 GW in Ethiopia), South and Central Asia (4 GW, including 1 GW in Bhutan), Europe (0.5 GW, half of which was in Türkiye), North and Central America (0.5 GW), and South America (0.3 GW).
At the end of 2024, global hydropower capacity stood at nearly 1,450 GW, of which over a quarter was in China (421 GW), followed by Brazil (110 GW), the United States (102 GW) and Canada (84 GW); these four countries almost accounted for half of the overall installed capacity during 2024. Overall, hydropower generated 4,578 TWh in 2024 (+10%).
