Ørsted's 2.4 GW offshore wind project in the UK gets planning consent

The UK Planning Inspectorate has granted planning consent to Ørsted’s 2,400 MW Hornsea Project Three offshore wind project in the North Sea. The Danish energy group can install a maximum of 231 turbines featuring rotors up to 265 metres in diameter and tip heights of 325 metres off the coast of Yorkshire. Ørsted submitted its final plans for the project for approval in May 2018.

In December 2020, Ørsted and Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) completed the 1,218 MW Hornsea 1 offshore wind project in the North Sea. Hornsea One was granted a Final Investment Decision Enabling contract (Contract for Difference, CfD) by the British Government in 2014 and will receive a fixed tariff for the first 15 years of production. Ørsted had started to build the wind park in January 2018.

The United Kingdom aims to reach 40 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 65 to 125 GW by 2050. Up to 12 GW of Contracts for Difference auction rounds could be launched later in 2021.
