Ørsted will reposition its 966 MW Skipjack offshore wind project in the US

The Danish renewable energy developer Ørsted has decided to reposition its 966 MW Skipjack Wind project off the coast of the US State of Maryland, considering that the financial incentives (Offshore Wind Renewable Energy Certificates, ORECs) provided by Maryland were no longer commercially viable, in a context of inflation, high interest rates and supply chain constraints. Ørsted will seek to continue advancing development and permitting for the combined Skipjack Wind I and II project by submitting an updated construction and operations plan to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to pursue the reposition of the offshore wind project in the future.

Besides the withdrawal, the Danish developer has announced the acquisition of 50% of Eversource’s 924 MW Sunrise Wind offshore wind project in the state of New York, a deal that is still subject to the successful award of the project in the ongoing New York 4 solicitation for offshore wind capacity and subsequential signing of an OREC contract with New York’s energy agency NYSERDA and other relevant regulatory approvals. The project is expected to be completed in 2026 if it comes successful from the solicitation.
