Ørsted secures permit for its 1.5 GW Skåne offshore wind project in Sweden

The Danish energy group Ørsted has been granted a building permit by the County Administrative Board of Skåne (southern Sweden) for its 1.5 GW Skåne Havsvindpark offshore wind project. The board approved the environmental impact assessment of the wind park and granted the company a permit for the construction and operation of the project adjacent to a Natura 2000 area (nature protection areas in the European Union). The project will be located 22 km south of Ystad and Trelleborg and is expected to produce 7 TWh/year. It is expected to start producing electricity in 2029 and will require an investment of SEK25bn to SEK50bn (€2.2-4.5bn).

Ørsted, which just became the first energy company to join the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA) to support a faster deployment of offshore wind, is developing a total of six offshore wind projects in Sweden. In addition to the Skåne Havsvindpark, the company is developing the five more offshore wind parks totalling 16.5 GW in western, southern and central Sweden, where there is a need for increased electricity production.

Under the Agreement on Swedish Energy Policy, Sweden has issued a roadmap for a transition to an entirely renewable electricity system (100% renewable electricity production) by 2040. In 2021, the country had 193 MW of offshore wind capacity (and nearly 12 GW of onshore wind).
