Ørsted divests from Stigsnæs coal power assets (Denmark)

Danish energy group Ørsted has decided to divest from the Stigsnæs coal-fired power plant and the Stigsnæs Transit Harbour. The group signed an agreement to sell the assets to a consortium named Stigsnæs Industripark A/S, which includes Rimeco Aktieselskab, Aabenraa, Kloster A/S, Løsning, HM Entreprenør A/S, Horsens, and P. Olesen & Sønner A/S, Hovedgård. The consortium will be in charge of cleaning up the area and plans to remove the existing power station buildings with a view to developing the area. The transaction will be fully completed by end-2019 and it is still subject to approval by the Danish authorities.

The Stigsnæs power plant was definitively decommissioned in 2012 and the area is currently used as a coal transit harbour. The first unit of 143 MW was commissioned in 1966 and stopped 2008, while the second unit of 246 MW started operation in 1971 and was decommissioned in 2012. Ørsted has pledged to no longer use coal as a fuel by 2023.
