Ørsted has announced that its 920 MW Sunrise Wind project will challenge the US government’s December 2025 decision to suspend its offshore wind lease and will seek a court injunction (Ørsted press release, 07/01/2026).
- In December 2025, the Trump administration suspended leases for five offshore wind projects under construction off the US East Coast, totalling 6 GW, citing national security concerns (KEI, 31/12/2025).
Ørsted stated that Sunrise Wind is in advanced stages of construction, approximately 45% complete, with all necessary permits already secured. At the time of the lease suspension, the project was expected to begin generating power as early as October 2026. Once fully operational in 2027, the project will provide affordable power under a 25-year contract with the State of New York.
In early January 2026, Revolution Wind (700 MW), a 50-50 joint venture between Ørsted and Global Infrastructure Partners’ Skyborn Renewables, along with Norway’s Equinor, filed complaints challenging the US Department of the Interior’s orders suspending their wind projects.
