Ørsted and ESB partner to develop up to 5 GW of offshore wind in Ireland

Ireland’s ESB and Denmark’s Ørsted have signed an agreement to jointly develop up to 5 GW of offshore wind capacity in Ireland, as well as associated green hydrogen projects. The two companies will establish a 50:50 joint venture, and the first offshore wind projects to arise from this partnership are expected to compete in the next Irish wind auction under the Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (ORESS 2.1).

In May 2023, The Irish government awarded 3,075 MW of offshore wind capacity across four projects in its first wind auction (ORESS 1). Earlier in June 2023, EDF entered into a partnership with Simply Blue Group to develop two floating offshore wind projects off Ireland, namely the 1.35 GW Western Star project and the 1.3 GW Emerald project.

As of end-2021, Ireland only had 25 MW of installed offshore wind capacity (and 4.3 GW of onshore wind). However, Ireland’s Offshore Energy Programme includes a target to deliver 5 GW of offshore wind energy by 2030 and and a further 2 GW of floating wind to be in development by 2030. The country also targets at least 37 GW of offshore wind by 2050.
