Orlen will take over Poland’s section of the Yamal gas pipeline, ousting Gazprom

The Polish state-owned company Orlen Group has announced that it will take over the Polish section of the Yamal gas pipeline, thus removing Russia’s Gazprom from the 48% stake it owns in Europol Gaz, which owns the Polish section of the pipeline. Under the deal, Europol Gaz would buy back Gazprom's shares in the company and Orlen, which currently also owns a 52% stake (48% through PGNiG that Orlen acquired in 2022 and 4% through Gas Trading), would take control over the system of gas transit pipelines. Due to the sanctions against Gazprom, funds from the PLN787m (€174m) transaction would be frozen in a special bank account.

The 684 km pipeline section in Poland is operated by the Polish state-owned gas transmission company Gaz-System. In total the Yamal gas pipeline runs for 4,107 km, connecting Russian natural gas fields in the Yamal Peninsula to Germany via Belarus and Poland. It has a capacity of 33 bcm/year.
