Orlen secures licences for 5 offshore wind projects (5.2 GW) in Poland’s Baltic Sea

Poland’s Orlen Group has received a final decision from the Polish Minister of Infrastructure, awarding the company licences for five new offshore wind development sites in the Baltic Sea. Orlen’s five proposed offshore wind projects are planned to have a combined capacity of about 5.2 GW, generating enough electricity to supply around 8 million Polish households.

Among the five licences awarded to Orlen, four are situated on the Oder Bank near Kołobrzeg, while the fifth is located on the Słupsk Bank. The area adjoins the site of the 1.2 GW Baltic Power wind park, a project developed by Orlen and Canada’s Northland Power. Regarding the five new projects, the initial development phase will encompass wind resource assessment, preliminary geotechnical surveys, and environmental impact assessments.

The Orlen Group plans to achieve 9 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2030. As of end-2022, Poland did not yet have any offshore wind capacity but had 8 GW of onshore wind capacity, which represented over 13% of the country’s total installed capacity.
