ORIX Corporation has started construction of two BESS projects with a combined capacity of 145 MW/589 MWh in the Oita and Yamagata prefectures of Japan (ORIX press release, 30/09/2026). The portfolio consists of the 70 MW/280 MWh Yufu project in Oita Prefecture, and the 75 MW/309 MWh Yonezawa project in Yamagata Prefecture. The facilities are expected to begin operations in 2028 and 2030, respectively.
The projects are ORIX's first grid-scale battery developments financed through third-party capital. ORIX will retain a 23.7% ownership stake, while three external investors will hold the remaining 76.3%. ORIX will provide asset management services, while group company ORIX Renewable Energy Management Corporation will be responsible for construction safety management, operations and maintenance.
The projects expand ORIX's BESS portfolio, which includes the 48 MW/113 MWh Kinokawa Energy Storage Plant in Wakayama Prefecture and the 134 MW/548 MWh Maibara Koto Energy Storage Plant in Shiga Prefecture.
