Origin Energy has submitted plans to expand the battery energy storage complex at its Eraring power plant in New South Wales, Australia, increasing the project's total capacity to 1.2 GW/8.6 GWh (Australian government press release, 2026). The proposal, known as Eraring BESS North, would add 500 MW/4.9 GWh of eight-hour battery storage adjacent to the existing Eraring battery facilities. Construction is expected to begin in 2028 subject to regulatory approvals, with commercial operations targeted for early-to-mid 2031.
The expansion builds on the existing Eraring battery programme, which includes the operational Eraring Battery 1 facility rated at 460 MW/1.8 GWh and the Eraring Battery 2 project rated at 240 MW/1.4 GWh, currently under construction and expected to enter service in early 2027. The proposed battery system will be developed on land adjacent to the existing facilities and will utilise the site's transmission and grid infrastructure. The project is intended to support electricity supply following the planned closure of the Eraring coal-fired power station in 2029.
